Memorial Statue to Dead Fishermen
Cape May, New Jersey
Unveiled in 1988, "Dedicated to Fishermen Lost at Sea," the memorial features, atop a pedestal, a granite carving of a life-size young widow wearing a rain coat, with her two children. The bewildered boy looks up at her for guidance, but she stares blankly out at Cape May Harbor, fruitlessly waiting for her fisherman to return.
When the memorial was dedicated, it had an accompanying slab engraved with 50 names. Since that time a second slab and 29 names have been added.
The top of each slab, and the ground in front of them, is strewn with seashell offerings. Back in 1988 it may have been a remote spot for quiet reflection, but now it's in a neighborhood of million dollar homes.
