Times are tough in the Land of Lincoln, where several of its attractions may close their doors due to state budget cuts. But Uncle Sam has just given the green light to a new attraction, granting Alton, Illinois, $200,000 to help build a plaza commemorating its many devastating floods.
The Plaza, according to the Alton Telegraph, sounds like a commendable blend of calamity and audience participation:
“The benches will complement a reflective pool that will re-circulate the water and cascade over the tops of the sandbags in the sculpture. A monument will show high water marks of record floods. There also will be a flood line platform on which visitors can stand to see how high the river waters rose, while offering a photo opportunity.”
Reminding visitors of Alton’s occasionally platform-worthy floodwaters will help them to appreciate their dry parking space when they visit, and help them to understand why Alton’s residents are so tall and why its monsters are so hungry.
The Plaza is scheduled to be unveiled some time in 2009 — barring another flood.
