Parking Spots: House of Cars

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

The National Building Museum could use a jazzier name (Architecturama?) and their new exhibit, “House of Cars: Innovation and the Parking Garage” (October 17-July 11), takes on a generally less-than-scintillating subject. But the curators may have a point: this overlooked and much maligned practical urban necessity deserves a spot on the exhibition roster. For, as the press release states, “In a world without parking garages, parking lots would sprawl across our cities.” And that would be yucky.

Pennsylvania: Pagan As You Go

Friday, September 25th, 2009

When a group of sociable Pagans decided to hold their “Celebrating Earth Spirituality Festival” at the semi-charming and vaguely Tudoresque (circa 1996) theme shopping hamlet of Stoudtburg Village, little did they know that the gathering would cause a retail revolt. An offended group of shopkeepers refused to open on that day, lest they come in [...]

Instead, there’s a classic car show, a concert by The Turtles, Herman’s [...]

Hollywood Eliminates Waxy Buildup

Friday, April 10th, 2009

The Hollywood Wax Museum has been open since 1965. And its owner has decided it’s time to clean out the closets.

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Frank Bates let us know his Airstream Ranch, Dover Florida, will be the sole subject of a hearing open to the public tomorrow in a Tampa courthouse. The Airstream Ranch, a line of Airstream trailers upended a la Cadillac Ranch, has been under attack as an illegal eyesore by a couple of irate neighbors and [...]
