Evacuation Day: No Royals, No Flush
November 25, 2008
Hasty retreats rarely get celebrated in America, and rightfully so. Unless you happen to be rich and powerful enough to have a comfy hideaway, there isn’t much about skedaddling to be pleased about.
But if it’s someone else running away? Well, that’s a different story. Thus both New York City and New Jersey today celebrate the 225th anniversary of Evacuation Day, the day that the British finally packed up and left America (and took their prison ships with them).
In the spirit of Evacuation Day, we honor one of our treasured multi-story outhouses — a triumph of American pre-plumbing ingenuity and our urge to dump what we no longer need. The pit yaws beneath us, yet we rise, triumphantly, two and sometimes even three stories tall!
