Grinding Rocks Bring Friction To The Golden State
October 22, 2008
We have been ignorant of the tourist potential of the Grinding Rock. We only became aware of its existence last week, when the Grass Valley Union ran a story about the unveiling of a Grinding Rock tourist attraction in Nevada City, California. Charismatic rocks have always had their fans, and this ancient Indian food preparation slab seemed to fit that category, kind of.
Then on Tuesday we were shocked to see a second news report, this one in the Elk Grove Citizen, of another Grinding Rock — this one only an hour south of the new Grinding Rock. It’s been an attraction — according to the story — since 1974, and it even has its own state park and its own viewing platform.
Mere coincidence? Or the first salvo in a struggle for the hearts and minds of Grinding Rock fans?
It would seem that the Nevada City rock, while new, has a way to go to match the presentation of its older neighbor. A little competition between attractions is usually good, and the drive to spy on each other is short.
