Preachers may insist that the Devil is all around us, but he rarely appears along our highways nowadays. And who can blame him for keeping a low profile? His chair has been toppled, his road has been eliminated, and his poor pupfish are practically extinct. Even the headstone attributed to his name is a disappointment.
Things were very different 100 years ago. Back then, the devil really was everywhere, or at least everywhere between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. That’s why fans of Old Scratch may want to visit southern New Jersey this Friday — to mark the centennial of “Phenomenal Week,” a seven-day stretch between January 16 and 22, 1909, in which the Jersey Devil was spotted at least 30 times.
Where Beelzebub went afterward is a mystery, although if he isn’t in New Jersey this weekend he may be hanging out in Michigan.
