Cryptozoologists ahoy! The Point Pleasant, West Virginia, seventh annual Mothman Festival has begun. It’s a celebration of the 1966-67 visits of one of America’s most charismatic creatures, and an excuse to stock up on the latest Mothman souvenirs and secret gossip. Much of the outdoor activity will take place around the town’s iconic Mothman statue, including consumption of Point Pleasant’s traditional Mothman pancakes.
The Festival includes a two-day Miss Mothman Pageant that begins on September 18, a slew of “Mothman witnesses” that visitors can pepper with questions on September 20, and a live performance by the band Mothman and a Mothman powerlifting contest somewhere in-between.
The Miss Mothman Pageant is held in advance of the rest of the festivities so that the newly-crowned queen can meet and greet attendees over the weekend. According to the Point Pleasant Register, this year’s pageant has 57 contestants.
A highlight of the Festival is the Friday and Saturday night TNT Hayride, which takes visitors back to the abandoned World War II dynamite factory where Mothman first terrorized the locals in the dark.
Road-trippers might want to build in some time to visit Flatwoods as well, which is West Virginia’s other monster hot spot.
I obviously have been away from my home state of WV too long! I had no idea that a mothman festival existed. Another example of why I love this Web site so much!
