New Orleans Betting On Bugs
June 12, 2008
You have to admire The Big Easy’s chutzpah. In the heat of summer the city is unveiling its first big tourist attraction since Hurricane Katrina smashed the city in 2005. And it’s about bugs.
The Insectarium, which opens tomorrow, calls itself “the largest freestanding museum in the United States dedicated to insects.” We spoke with its PR director, Sarah Burnette, who conceded that “here in New Orleans we’re very, very, VERY well-acquainted with bugs,” but who believes that people will pay to see them nevertheless. Some locals who posted comments after a Times-Picayune story were not happy about the new bug attraction, but the Insectarium is betting that it will have more fans than naysayers. “It is kind of a love-hate relationship,” Sarah said. “But I think there’s going to be a real curiosity about it, especially when they learn that we’re going to be cooking bugs.”
