Sitting Bull Won’t Sit Still
May 28, 2008
For decades we’ve followed the tug-of-war over the bones of Sitting Bull. Some say that he’s buried in North Dakota. Some say that he was dug up in the middle of the night and moved to South Dakota. A news story in the Billings Gazette says that he may have been dug up in the middle of the night again and moved to Canada. But just in case he wasn’t, his great-grandkids want him dug up again anyway and moved to Montana.
We like Sitting Bull where he is, as long as where he is isn’t some unmarked plot north of the border. But if some town in Montana wants to rename itself after a dead guy and turn his grave into a tourist attraction, which is what the article suggests may happen — and it’s been done before — that’s okay with us, too.
