VW Bug Welcome in Sparks, NV
October 8, 2008
One month ago the VW Beetle Bug, which has been a fixture in Reno, Nevada, for 29 years, was in danger of being squashed — metaphorically. The new owner of the building on which it stood did not want it, and there was fear that the sculpture might end up dissected and abandoned — like roach carapaces under a sink — rusting away on some desert scrap heap.
Happily, the bug has been given a second life by a local arts commission, according to a report in the Reno Gazette-Journal. It will be moved three miles east, to the neighboring city of Sparks, where it will stand atop a VW custom repair shop within easy view of I-80. Even better, according to the story, the bug’s new owner has pledged to restore it and to dress it up for Halloween and Christmas.
Nevada is not the only state where one can see bug legs on a VW Beetle. But its desert climes seem right for the scuttling autos, which we reckon would be the preferred post-apocalyptic mode of transportation between mutant gambling enclaves.
