Or -- maybe it's just a rock with scratches on it. This four-building complex was opened in 1916, a tribute to New Englander's tendency not to throw anything away. Also here: the last cougar killed in New Hampshire. Captain John Smith, the man who coined the name "New England," gets no respect. His once-impressive monument, erected in 1864, has been reduced to a ruined base with a weather-hammered bronze plaque. The Stenman family layered and pasted and rolled approximately 100,000 newspapers to make their dream home in 1929 -- and it's still standing. |
