Killed and stuffed in 1886. The most famous dead buffalo in the world, as it was used 25 years later as the model for the Buffalo Nickel. Struck by lightning, the touring circus elephant Old Pitt was buried where she fell in 1943. A formerly famous (and now stuffed) two-ton bovine is exhibited in the local historical museum. Carved from a dead tree, Chief Plenty Coups, last Chief of the Crow, stands proud next to the gas pumps. "The Smithsonian of the West" has a Viking ship, a two-headed calf, a motorcycle made of wood, a KKK hood, and a winged monkey from The Wizard of Oz. 35 buildings full of stuff. Built out of a water tank, 18 feet tall, with claw-like hands and a zombie's face. And only one among several equally oddball sculptures. Aside from the typical obsolete Info Age cast-offs, the museum displays an original Apollo Lunar Mission computer, a watch worn on the moon, and a replica of the Antikythera Mechanism. |
