The lake itself, which is 19 miles long and 8 miles at its widest point, supports an abundance of wildlife and is well known for its good fishing (bass being the principal sport fish). There are many recreational opportunities -- several businesses around the lake rent boating equipment and offer parasail rides, gliding is available only 30 minutes away in Middletown, and there are a number of first-rate golf courses within easy driving distance. For those who enjoy wine tasting, we recommend Lake County's highly acclaimed wineries -- in particular, Kendall-Jackson, Konocti, and Guenoc. Guenoc Winery was developed by the well known British actress and fin-de-siecle personality, Lillie Langtry, over 100 years ago. The area is generously endowed with state parks. The Mendocino National Forest at the north end of the Lake, and Anderson Marsh State Historic Park in Lower Lake, all offer a wide variety of hikes, bird watching and archaeological sites.
