Houston's beloved Beer Can House will undergo a major restoration, funded in part by a $125,000 Houston Endowment grant obtained by the Orange Show Foundation. The Orange Show acquired the late John and Mary Milkovisch's beer can-covered home in 2001.
John Milkovisch spent 18 years dutifully drinking beer to provide the raw materials to create walls, archways, and flip-tab curtains. The Orange Show plans to study how his design evolved over time, and may restore some of the earlier features.
Many of the aluminum can structures and arrangements have weathered, faded, and rusted.
Though the house is increasingly surrounded by towering condos, the Orange Show plans to keep the house at its current location at 222 Malone Street. The repairs are planned for completion by late 2006. [Thanks for the heads up from Jennifer, Greg, Laird, Mark, Tom...] [03/19/2005]
