Biloxi, Mississippi's 16-foot tall "Golden Fisherman" statue, which inexplicably disappeared last weekend, has been found. The civic statue, created to honor the local seafood industry, is composed of a ton of melted down nautical gear donated by fishermen. It was felled during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, and remained down next to the destroyed Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge until the theft.
The statue was found deposited in a local lake several days later. The statue snatcher's motives are unclear, since the massive sculpture weighed more than a ton, but contains no pure metal that can be salvaged for scrap. Police are questioning a suspect.
Local Golden Fisherman fans have pledged money for its safe return to its home at the collapsed bridge. [06/18/2006]
