The Gemini Giant -- America's Space Age Muffler Man -- may leave Wilmington, Illinois for a new home -- but we're hoping not. Owners Jerry and Sharon Gatties have put their Launching Pad Restaurant and its mascot up for sale, planning to retire. Sharon's parents John and Bernice Korelc, sold them the business in 1986, when they retired.
The Gemini Giant was first purchased by Korelc in 1965 to promote his business along Route 66. The 28-ft. tall statue wears a space helmet and holds an 8-ft. long fiberglass rocket. He was named by a fifth grader in a contest.
The restaurant contains murals depicting the history of Route 66, and is a popular stop for Route 66 fanatics. The Gatties hope to sell the property to someone who will continue its operation in the same vein. (Thanks to Jeff Wisniewski for the tip) [12/31/2006]
