A garish landmark dinosaur along Route 1 in Saugus, Massachusetts was damaged last Thursday night/Friday morning when vandals managed to tip it over, breaking the statue at the ankles. The orange fiberglass Tyrannosaurus Rex is over 12 feet tall, and is well known as part of the Saugus continuum of roadside horrors.
Steel rods and concrete anchoring the statue apparently weren't enough to prevent dementers from violently rocking it at the base -- somehow -- until it broke.
No arrests have been made in connection with the crime. The owners of Route 1 Miniature Golf and Batting Cages, where the statue stood for 47 years, plan to repair it. [Thanks for tips to post-event eyewitness Jo, also Peter, and Michele] [04/10/2007]
