Luray Caverns Celebrates "1 Inch Anniversary"

Things happen very slowly in the world of natural cave attractions. Luray Caverns in Luray, VA, opened 120 years ago. It is currently celebrating its "1 Inch Anniversary." The picturesque formations in caves are formed by water slowly accumulating calcite deposits to grow stalactites and stalagmites. The formations have grown exactly one cubic inch since Luray opened to public tours.

Other gimmicky offerings of this classic vacation stop include the Fried Eggs formation, and the Stalacpipe Organ - a musical organ wired to resonate through natural rock draperies throughout the cave.
