Max Baer Jr., who played Jethro in the tv series The Beverly Hillbillies, has won the approval of the Reno, Nevada, Planning Commission to build a $130 million Hillbilly-theme casino.
Jethro's Beverly Hillbillies Mansion & Casino, according to Baer, will rejuvenate Reno's sluggish gambling industry and will also pump new life into the Park Lane Mall, where it will be located.
The casino should be easy to spot from anywhere in town, as Baer also won approval to build a 240-foot oil derrick, topped by a 70-foot flame.
The FAA objected to Baer's plan, demanding a shorter derrick, and some members of the Commission wanted the flame extinguished between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. But Baer's argument that a lesser or flameless derrick would not make the proper "statement" apparently carried more weight. [11/22/1998]
