Corn Palace Says "We Shall Not Be Held Hostage"

Tourism News

The Mitchell, SD, City Council turned down a $400,000 federal grant for the Corn Palace because it could limit future renovation or expansion at the tourist attraction.

The Save America's Treasures grant would have been used for a project to replace the deteriorating domes on the Corn Palace roof. But City officials said Monday that they could not accept the 50-year easement that was tied to the grant because it would hinder the city if it needed to replace or renovate the building.

"If we sign this, we could hold this town hostage for the next 50 years," said Councilman Bill Rubendall. [04/09/2001]
