Future Perry Como Museum in jeopardy
Perry Como's hometown of Canonsburg, PA, fears that an upcoming auction of the dead singer's estate will threaten plans for a museum in his honor.
1,525 items from Como's waterfront home in Jupiter, FL, will be on the block during a three-day auction beginning on May 30. Among the items are Como's barber tools, a set of cufflinks from Bob Hope, a bracelet with the names of Como's hit songs (How many came you name?) on gold charms, and photographs of the singer with former Presidents Eisenhower and Reagan.
Officials in Canonsburg, a former steel town just south of Pittsburgh, are worried that they will miss out on one-of-a-kind items because of the auction. According to Canon-McMillan School Board President Manuel Pihakis, who visited Como in Jupiter two years ago, "Perry would not approve of this sale if he had known about it."
