A half-finished ship-shaped building in Hatteras Village, NC may never house the complete Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum unless more funds are raised, according to recent news reports. Since 1999, work has progressed to create a unique public home in the Outer Banks on the southern tip of Hatteras Island telling the story of myriad sunken wrecks. Then the money ran out.
The Museum will exhibit items salvaged from wrecks, including a Nazi Enigma machine plucked from the belly of U-85, a German U-boat sunk by in 1942 (but too rusty to go head to head with the Enigma at Maryland's National Cryptologic Museum). A few displays can be viewed now at the GotAM, no admission fee, while the museum waits to be finished. [08/12/2003]
