James Dean Museum Moves From Fairmount, Indiana

Tourism News

In a move that will solidify Garfield creator Jim Davis celebrity stranglehold on the town of Fairmount, Indiana, the James Dean Memorial Gallery is moving to a new location along I-69, in Gas City, IN. Both Davis and Dean were born in Fairmount, and the city water tower features images of them bothfor now.

While some are spinning the new location as a way to increase visitors to the Dean shrine -- the curator estimates that yearly attendance will grow from 10,000 a year to 50,000 -- we see it as a power grab by the Davis faction. There is a Davis exhibit at the Fairmount Historical Museum, which will now be free from competition.

The new 7,000-square-feet James Dean Memorial Gallery will contain a 35-seat theater and research library. It is scheduled to open on May 15th and will be heralded with searchlights, a car show and 50s music.

August 2006:: The James Dean Gallery closed in 2006. Not enough attendance. [02/22/2004]
