Stuffed Togo the Wonder Dog
Wasilla, Alaska
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters displays the stuffed carcass of heroic sled dog Togo, who led a team delivering serum to quell Nome's diphtheria epidemic in the dead of winter, 1925. While Balto the Wonder Dog garners most media attention, modern Iditarod fans say it was seasoned huskie Togo who led the legendary musher Leonhard Seppala on the most grueling portion of the the relay, across Norton Sound. The team traveled hundreds of miles from Nome and back.
A last minute order by Alaska's governor to speed delivery by adding extra relay teams robbed Togo of his rightful place in dog history.
