Balboa Park Shoe Tree.

Shoe Tree Disc Golf Course (Gone)

Field review by the editors.

San Diego, California

[NOTE: This Shoe Tree was reported to have fallen in a storm in January 2008] Most shoe trees are isolated along highway stretches where there is little else to do except toss your footwear at the heavens. The Frisbee Course Shoe Tree is an exception, in Balboa Park in downtown San Diego, a place bustling with leisure activity-seekers.

The shoe tree stands on a grassy slope at the second tee of a Frisbee Golf Course. It's a mostly dead eucalyptus tree, with a few high branches from which hundreds of shoes dangle. In other regions with more varied weather this craggy bundle of splinters would have collapsed long ago.

Tossing a pair and getting them to snag is harder than it first appears. The dead tree doesn't offer the usual network of secondary branches, and the incumbent shoes are packed in a somewhat deflective configuration. The slope also adds a degree of difficulty...

You can park and visit the tree for free, but be respectful of the Frisbee players playing through, who paid to navigate the course.
