Birthplace of Angie Dickinson (Gone)

Field review by the editors.

Kulm, North Dakota

The star of TV's "Police Woman," and the films Big Bad Mama and Dressed to Kill -- and longtime girlfriend of Frank Sinatra -- was born Angeline Brown in this tiny town, the daughter of the publisher of the local weekly newspaper. She was delivered in this building, which was the newspaper office, next to city hall.

It's now a private home -- 18 South Main Ave. -- a flat-fronted white box, pressed right to the edge of the street, about ten feet wide with a door in the center and a rectangular window on each side. It is utterly undistinguished; the ultimate anonymous building.

Angie came back to town to visit in 1987 -- she had left in 1941 -- but, according to locals in the town cafe, "She was out of favor with us for many years." No plaque marks the site. "We really don't have anything, do we," mused the cafe counter lady. "We really should put up something, shouldn't we."
