Blowing Rock - Flying Indian Legend
Blowing Rock, North Carolina
Blowing Rock is a cliff above Johns River Gorge, where a strong wind upwells.
The legend, in brief: A despondent Indian brave -- torn by his crush on an Indian maiden and his manly responsibilities -- threw himself to certain death off of this rocky precipice. The maiden prayed from the outcropping until the brave was blown back into her arms!
The logo of this popular tourist trap immortalizes the moment.
From that day, it was said, a perpetual strong wind welled up over the rock. We recall, as kids, spending time tossing all of our accumulated car trash -- fast food wrappers and paper cups -- into the breeze to see if the legend was true or not.
