Dinosaur Tracks
Moen-avi, Arizona
There are 160 million-year old dinosaur tracks along a riverbed in Moenkopi, Arizona, five miles west of Tuba City.
Two Native American couples sit in their pickup truck waiting for visitors; then suggest "tips or donations." On the truck side is a spray-painted sheet that reads "Dinosaur Tracks." The tracks are spread over a couple of acres of mottled rock surface; some have been outlined in chalk in case you have trouble seeing them, or juxtaposed with small plastic toy dinosaurs.
Our guide, a Native American, kept asking us what country we were from.
The dino track tour business has supposedly been operating here in this DIY way since 1956 with generations of guides -- and even an opportunity to buy some Native American jewelry. Be warned: we've received a few reports of pressure by some of the guides suggesting tips of $20 per person. This is an unofficial attraction, with no electricity, phones, buildings.
