Flag planting at Craters of the Moon.

Craters of the Moon

Field review by the editors.

Arco, Idaho

Whenever we find ourselves in the vicinity of this blackened, volcanic zone, we're glad we packed some lightweight props.

The literature advises: "By hiking short distances you can find yourself peering into the vent of a cinder cone or descending into the cool interior of a lava tube." But wandering the rubble field wears thin after a while. The harsh vacuum of government-funded boredom closes around those who forget a pressure suit and a little flag.
