American folk hero or ancestor of Alfred E. Neuman? Whoever created this statue in front of the Johnny Appleseed Restaurant apparently saw Johnny as the latter, with a goofy expression, giant feet, and a pot on his head. There seems to have been some problem with scale as well, as Johnny is carrying apples as big as pumpkins. Pinholes in Johnny's shirt suggest that he could speak at one time, but he seems to be mute now.
This part of Virginia calls itself "Apple Capital of The USA," but true-life Johnny Appleseed (yes, he was a real guy) never set foot in Virginia, bare or otherwise. Perhaps that is why they mock him?
