Muffler Man - Indian Chief
Waxahachie, Texas
Most of us were denied the privilege of attending a high school with its own Muffler Man mascot. But that doesn't stop us, as adults, from cheering on these spirited giants from the sidelines.
We stopped briefly at the football field of Waxahachie High School, north of town. The M-Man is mascot of the Waxahachie Indians, who were 4-A state champs in 1992 with a 16-0 record.
He watches the field from the home stand's side. The Chief is a rare Indian hybrid (there's another of a brave in North Platte, Nebraska) -- upraised "How" arm of the Indian brave, but the lantern jaw of a cowboy or service station attendant. His warpaint is applied in school colors, and his skin is a pale, non-Native Am. pallor.
