Big Chair, Wingdale, NY.

World's Largest Chair - Gone

Field review by the editors.

Wingdale, New York

According to the promotional literature, "The Big Chair stands as a monument to man's ingenuity, perseverance, and desire to surpass what has been done before."

Wingdale's first big chair, a 25-footer, went up in 1978, but was demolished a decade later due to safety concerns. A sturdier model, some 30 feet tall, was erected in 1996 by the Hunt Furniture Company, using two tons of wood. The chair appears to be just over the Connecticut border (or straddles a vagary of the state line).

Set back into the woods at the Webatuck Craft Village, the chair blends so well with its surroundings that it's nearly invisible, despite its bulk. We fear this place is visited mostly by unappreciative lovers of normal-size furniture.

November 2001: Chair was destroyed in a big Spring storm. Visitors in June 2002 confirmed it has not been replaced.
