Blue Army Shrine
Washington, New Jersey
The National Blue Army Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary opened in 1978 and covers 150 acres. It's dedicated to the message of Fatima, reportedly delivered direct from the Mother of God to three Portuguese children in 1917. Portugal is far away, so America's Blue Army built its shrine here.
Many Catholic statues dot the grounds: Jesus, the Pope, saints, even the "Angel of United States," which must be a newer addition to the celestial roster. Mary herself stands 145 feet in the air, at the apex of the shrine chapel, whose peaked roof is meant as a metaphor for a robe shielding her children. And there's an exact replica of the Chapel of Apparitions at Fatima, one of only two such replicas in the world, according to the Blue Army.
