Slave Relics Museum

Field review by the editors.

Walterboro, South Carolina

The personal collection of Danny Drain, a slave descendant. Over 2,000 artifacts, including some that would be suited for a wax museum medieval torture gallery: human chains, whips, branding irons, spiked ankle shanks and neck collars. The museum also exhibits everyday items used and made by slaves, such as beds, cradles, furniture, dolls, quilts, tools, wooden bowls and spoons.

Danny, who lives upstairs from the museum, has turned one of its back rooms into a life-size recreation of slave quarters, and wants to build three slave cabins in the back yard.
