Lincoln Landing
Rockport, Indiana
For Lincoln completists, a visit to at least one of the two Lincoln Landing monuments is a must. This is the oldest, erected on the 100th anniversary of Abe's trip to New Orleans in 1828, and marks the spot where he launched the flatboat that took him there. According to a plaque mounted on the limestone monument, Lincoln Landing is important because it was on this trip that 19-year-old Abe first saw the cruelty of slavery, which eventually led to his abolishment of it 35 years later as President.
Visually, the monument is most memorable for its bas-relief bronze bust of a young Lincoln with luxuriant, early Einstein hair.
