Statue of Extinct Labrador Duck
Elmira, New York
The Labrador Duck was last seen, anywhere on earth, in Elmira's Brand Park in late 1878. It disappeared thereafter. Where it went, along with all of its fellow Labrador ducks, is an unsolved mystery (no, they didn't all go to Labrador). The duck reportedly tasted bad, which rules out the Second Amendment as the culprit. About the only thing the experts can agree on is that after 1878 the Labrador Duck was never seen again, considered extinct, and is almost certainly a dead duck.
In 2009 a life-size bronze statue of the Duck was erected as a memorial in Brand Park. Optimistic visitors can hope that the statue will serve as a decoy, luring the reclusive ducks out of their hiding places. It isn't likely, but you'll never know unless you visit.
