Life-Size Statue of Monster Squid
Glovers Harbour, Newfoundland
In 1878 a giant squid washed ashore at the remote hamlet of Glover's Harbour, which is along the rugged Atlantic seaboard. The thing was 55 feet long and weighed over two tons. Years later, Guinness anointed it the biggest squid in the world.
In 2001 a life-size steel-reinforced concrete statue of the squid was erected near the spot where the real squid was found. The sculptor, from Saskatoon, was chosen because he had built other giant Canadian animals, including a moose and a woolly mammoth. He did a good job, with the squid's tentacles all akimbo, frozen in mid-wiggle.
Glover's Harbour also promotes its Bayview Lookout Nature Trail, which ends at a viewpoint overlooking the squid.
