Big Pit of Buffalo Bones

Field review by the editors.

Vore, Wyoming

Buffalo bones. Thousands and thousands of buffalo bones. 20 layers of buffalo bones! For roughly 300 years, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 buffalo were stampeded into this pit by various prehistoric tribes. The animals either died in the fall, or were massacred by Indians shooting into the pit with arrows. In 2011 an excavation building was opened at the Vore Buffalo Jump site, allowing both visitors and archaeologists to mingle with the bones in relative comfort. Only 5 percent of the site has been excavated, so the estimated buffalo corpse total could rise significantly. If there's ever a ghost hunters show just for animals, it should come here.
