Bronze Statue of Big Mammoth Mom and Baby
Lubbock, Texas
Pity the poor Columbian Mammoth. Even though they were bigger than Woolly Mammoths -- which you see in nearly every caveman video and Creationist museum diorama -- they're mostly forgotten. That's because Columbian Mammoths look pretty much like modern-day elephants, only larger.
Also, every single one of them is dead.
Your rare chance to see a Columbian Mammoth is outside the Interpretive Center at Lubbock Lake Landmark State Park, where a life-size, 11-foot-tall mammoth mom and baby have been reproduced in bronze. If you visit and take a photo, your Facebook friends will probably comment, "Awesome elephant!!!," but you can correct them.
Elsewhere in the park is a bronze statue of an extinct giant armadillo, and inside the Interpretive Center (open Tu-Sa 9-5 and Su 1-5) is a bloody wax diorama of Indians skinning a buffalo.
