Tyler Rose Museum
Tyler, Texas
The rose industry saved Tyler after a blight destroyed its peach crop. The town took the hint, and transformed itself into the Rose Capital of the Nation, complete with an annual festival and parade and America's largest municipal rose garden.
All of this is celebrated in the Tyler Rose Museum. There's an animated "attic" of memories set to music, an instructional film where "rose growing and processing are explained in fascinating detail" -- but by far the museum's highlight are the crazy-spectacular jeweled costumes and hats worn by past Rose Queens, and the "Treasured Crown" that the Queen alone can wear. Actually, it's an exact replica of the crown. The real one is considered so valuable that it's kept in a local bank vault.
