Giant Arrows
Mancos, Colorado
There's a wonderful and terrifying photo opportunity at an otherwise nondescript trading post named The Hogan.
Out front, about a dozen telephone poles have been fitted with giant arrowheads and feather fletchings, and stuck into the ground at a 45 degree angle. In between them are several teepees. The effect is that of a rain of massive Indian arrows. We assume the big Indians scared away the little ones before anyone was really hurt.
The arrows landed in 1981 thanks to Hogan owner Bill Countess and several local Native American artists, who realized that the giant projectiles would attract potential buyers for their rugs, jewelry, and pottery. Celebrities such as Harrison Ford, Delta Burke, and Ralph Lauren have pulled off the highway to see the arrows, and they had a cameo in the 2000 comedy, "Nurse Betty."
