Jimmy Carter High School Museum
Plains, Georgia
Former President Jimmy Carter's, and First Lady Rosalynn Carter's, old high school has been turned into a museum. Jimmy graduated in 1941, Rosalynn in 1944. At the time it was the only school in Plains, so they actually attended it from first grade through their high school graduations.
The school has restored of one of their classrooms, circa 1937, and displays a replica of Jimmy's Nobel Peace Prize and Oval Office desk. It's also restored its 1930s auditorium. We were surprised to learn that Jimmy and Rosalynn -- who both still live in town -- were arriving a half-hour after we had to leave, to watch what was described to us as a play based on the bawdy exploits of naughty Secret Service agents.
Schedule some extra time when you visit Plains. You never know when -- or for what strange reason -- the Carters may show up.
