Statue of Selena
Corpus Christi, Texas
"The Queen of Tejano," Selena Quintanilla-Prez, was murdered at age 23 in a Corpus Christi motel by the ex-president of her fan club. Two years later, in 1997, a Selena memorial and bronze statue by artist H.W. "Buddy" Tatum Jr. was erected -- the same year the movie "Selena" starring Jennifer Lopez was released.
As time passed, to give the statue more pizzazz, motion sensors were added in 2015 to trigger Selena's music and a narrated biography, and color-shifting LEDs were added in 2024.
Despite the presence of a railing, fans sometimes jump over the barrier to rub her bronze butt for luck.
