Restored 1930s Texaco Gas Station
Dwight, Illinois
Built in 1933, this Route 66 mainstay pumped gas for 66 years. It was the longest operating service station on The Mother Road, but finally shut off its pumps in 1999. Two years later it was named to the National Register of Historic Places, and five years after that it was restored (without services) to its original look.
Now it's the Dwight Visitor Center. Two bright red Texaco gas pumps stand beneath its outside awning, but there's no gas.
