One-Log Kevin Costner

Field review by the editors.

Sacramento, California

The owner of Silverado Building Materials and Nursery was obviously a big fan of the 1985 movie Silverado. The movie was a successful western genre reboot starring Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, John Cleese. Costner was a young, likable rake named "Jake."

Sometime around 1993, this giant cowboy figure was erected at Silverado, where it still stands, among the plantings and flowers for sale (the business has been renamed Thompson Building Materials). The sculpture is a stiff-carved and painted cowboy inspired by Costner's Jake character. It's 20 to 25-ft. tall, easily visible from the road.
