Random Giant Woman's Head
Sacramento, California
Titled "Matter Contemplates Spirit," the decapitated remains of a statue is a 2004 concrete composite sculpture by conceptual artist Stephen J. Kaltenbach. A woman's head appears to have rolled to a stop right at the doors of Dos Coyotes Border Cafe. Body Parts from Antiquity is a theme we'd imagine would be more at home in a Vegas casino; but scatter them sufficiently, such as at this shopping plaza with its coffee foot traffic, and it's startling public art!
If you want even more, head over to the Sacramento Convention Center, where Kaltenbach did another simulated statue chop job in 1998, "A Time to Cast Away Stones." At 555 Capitol Mall, his two giant severed hands clasp each other. Called "Peace." And a pair of 7-ft. tall Ozymandius legs may still be seeking their owner at California State University, Sacramento.
