Birthplace of President Garfield's Mom

Normally this would fly under even our hypertrivial radar, but someone actually took the trouble to engrave a granite monument -- a leftover cemetery obelisk from the look of it -- and place it at this rugged backwoods site. "Here was born Eliza Ballou," it states, "Mother of James Abram Garfield, 20th President of the United States." Garfield was shot and died in 1881, two days before her 80th birthday.

Address:: Monument Rd, Richmond, NH
Directions:: From Hwy 32, just north of the Massachusetts state line, turn east onto Green Woods Rd. Drive to the end, park, and continue on foot. Bear to the left, following Greenwood Rd (which becomes an ATV trail) for about a half mile. The trail ends at another trail, Monument Rd. Turn left, and follow Monument Rd about a quarter mile to the monument.
