50-Foot-Tall Thermometer
Galt, California
Built in 2010 by brothers Paul and Bill Giddens, who loved roadside attractions as kids and decided to make one as adults. A 50-foot-tall thermometer next to a major highway also serves as an ideal billboard for the Giddens' heating and air conditioning business.
The brothers labored to make the thermometer "look real" and built it to last. It reportedly contains over two miles of copper wire, and shows the temperature using more than 11,500 LEDs. Anchoring it are 13-foot-deep footings and a thermometer "bulb" at the bottom that weighs a ton.
