Birthplace of Liver-Eating Johnson
Asbury, New Jersey
New Jersey has had more than its share of unsavory associations, so it doesn't hurt the state to add one more. The official historical marker at Liver-Eating Johnson's birthplace accentuates the positive, noting that "Robert Redford movie 'Jeremiah Johnson' popularized his life" without going into detail about his dietary habits.
In fact, John Garrison (Johnson's real name) ate human livers, part of his one-man terror campaign against the Crow Indians. He did it far away, in the Wild West, which makes the acknowledgment of his birthplace less of an image problem for New Jersey than it otherwise might have been.
Johnson became so famous after the Robert Redford film that he was dug out of his California grave and reburied at a tourist attraction in Wyoming.
