House Teetering on Edge of Roof
La Jolla, California
A small wood frame cottage balances precipitously off the corner of a six-story wing of the Jacobs School of Engineering at University of California in San Diego. The unusual sculpture, named "Fallen Star" by Do Ho Suh, was installed in 2011 as part of the university's permanent sculpture collection. It explores feelings of cultural displacement and the notion of home (the artist moved from Korea to the United States).
The house is visible from many vantage points on campus. When the Warren Mall is filled with students walking to class, you probably won't see anyone but yourself marveling at the house teetering above. A couple of days a week the rooftop is open for visitors. It's landscaped with a garden and brick walkway, and the one-room interior is furnished.
